In her previous life, Layla used her gift as a contract mage to gather ninety-nine sacred cores for Neil, the Sacred Whale. When his transformation came, he answered her devotion with violence, piercing her heart and sending her into the Bloodtide Trench. Reborn at the contract ceremony, she refuses to repeat that bargain and instead chooses a dying little spirit snake. Neil, now human, works with Evelyn to shame Layla, forcing her to face the consequences of her former loyalty while old injuries remain unresolved. Yet the creature she selected is Poseidon, the Sea Emperor, whose loyalty gives her a powerful ally. As Neil recognizes what he lost, regret arrives too late. With Poseidon beside her, Layla must choose self-respect over sacrifice and build a life guided by her own wishes.
