Natalie Vance's marriage to Edward Sterling was never her choice, and the union turns darker when her husband, unable to father an heir, brings in Sebastian Reed, a male companion, to sleep with her so the family line can continue. Natalie feels degraded by the arrangement, yet Sebastian's steady kindness gradually draws out real affection between them. Working as a pair, Natalie and Sebastian compile proof that the Sterling family committed crimes against the Vance Group. During a charity gala, she makes Edward's violence and plotting known to everyone there. The divorce she sought finally comes through, letting Natalie leave her old life behind with Sebastian and step forward as a woman who answers to no one.
