On prom night, Hannah Hart and Dean Dumont are young lovers looking forward to a promised first time together, before Dean leaves for the military. Their plans are shaken when Elise humiliates Hannah and claims Dean was intimate with her the previous summer. Hannah struggles to accept the accusation, but the allegation threatens the trust between them. Four years later, Hannah has vowed not to see Dean again. That resolve is challenged when her father marries Dean's mother, making Hannah and Dean step-siblings without either of them knowing their new family connection is tied to the relationship they lost. As they are brought into the same family, the old misunderstanding, the concealed truth, and the boundaries of their new status create a difficult emotional crossroads.
