In 1994 Chicago, Lucy’s compassion draws her into the orbit of Ace Cavallo, a feared crime lord she encounters while helping an injured stranger. Their meeting takes an unexpected turn when Ace presents marriage as the answer to Lucy’s mother’s surgery, leaving her to weigh trust, safety, and a future she never planned. Lucy’s engagement collapses when people close to her betray her at the wedding, pushing her into a temporary union with a man known for violence and control. As hostility gives way to uneasy attraction, she must determine whether Ace’s protection hides genuine devotion—or another form of possession. Their arrangement also leaves rivals, old loyalties, and the danger surrounding Ace’s criminal world poised to test their fragile bond.
